Phoenix is situated northwest of central Durban, KZN. It was established as a township in 1976. It is associated with the Phoenix Settlement built by Mahatma Gandhi.
Residential areas surrounding Phoenix are Verulam, Kwa-Mashu, Tongaat and Inanda.
High unemployment has over the years resulted in many households living below the breadline. This impacted directly on the education of the children of this township.

The Phoenix Poverty Reduction Association was founded 17 years ago. The objective of the organisation is to eradicate poverty in the Phoenix and surrounding areas. To negotiate, network and co-operate with private, community, NGO’s, and governmental donor organisation wherever feasible in the promotion of the interests of these residents..
The aim of the Phoenix Poverty Reduction Association is to protect and promote the interests of the people of Phoenix and surrounding areas by attempting to reduce poverty through relief to improve the quality of life of the people.
